Sustainability at SUN
Shaping the Future of Corrugated Packaging
The corrugated industry has deep ties to sustainability due to its high rate of recyclability and its use of renewable resources.
Over the last few decades, the corrugated packaging industry has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact, notably achieving a 50% reduction in carbon emissions between 2006 and 2020. Advancements in manufacturing technology and processes have increased efficiency and decreased energy consumption in corrugated production, leading to reduced environmental impact. The industry has collectively taken a proactive approach to water recycling and conservation, along with increasing the use of renewable energy, further reducing corrugated’s environmental footprint.
At SUN, our commitment to sustainability is a direct reflection of our dedication to our people. We recognize how the actions we take today shape the future of our community tomorrow. Approaching SUN’s 40th anniversary, we place careful thought and intention behind everything we do to ensure that we will be able to provide comprehensive solutions for 40 more years and beyond.
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS & SERVICES
SUN’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its innovative product design and performance-improving services. By focusing on engineering equipment that lasts longer and performs more efficiently, SUN Automation ensures that its offerings contribute to our customers’ sustainability goals.
Our high-quality, durable products require less frequent replacement, thereby reducing waste and conserving resources. Moreover, SUN’s emphasis on efficiency not only optimizes operational performance but also minimizes energy consumption, leading to lower carbon emissions. As a result, our products help customers achieve their environmental objectives while maintaining high performance standards.
SUN’s machine rebuild services are integral to our sustainability efforts, as they extend the life of your current equipment, minimizing the need for new resources and reducing waste. By refurbishing and upgrading existing machinery, we not only ensure our equipment remains at the forefront of efficiency and technology but also support the circular economy.
Helios, SUN’s AI-driven IIoT solution, works to optimize Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), minimizing energy consumption while maintaining desired outcomes. Furthermore, its predictive maintenance capabilities prevent unexpected downtime and extend the lifespan of machinery, reducing the need for new equipment purchases and contributing to a more sustainable manufacturing environment.
SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS
SUN is committed to sustainable operations across its activities, taking deliberate steps to reduce waste and increase longevity. A significant initiative has been the 100% reuse of paper and corrugated materials. By acquiring a Ranpak Dunnage Machine, SUN can transform all used corrugated and paper material into dunnage, facilitating its reuse instead of contributing to waste. Additionally, the adoption of an Evaporator system has enabled the complete recycling of paint, preventing any of it from entering landfills and waterways.
SUN has implemented a progressive work schedule for its 120 employees in Glen Arm, MD. The manufacturing and distribution staff now enjoy a 4-day workweek, while all other employees are provided one work-from-home day. This adjustment not only improves work-life balance for the team at SUN but also contributes to a 20% reduction in transportation emissions.
Through collaborative efforts, we aim to ensure that every link in our supply chain reflects our commitment to sustainability. We expect our suppliers to adhere to standards that align with our sustainability goals. This includes the safe disposal of hazardous waste, compliance with regulations and laws governing air emissions and water discharges, and proactive measures to reduce the ecological footprint of their operations. We also expect our suppliers to take proactive measures in reducing emissions, enhancing efficiencies, and promoting the use of renewable resources.
PEOPLE & COMMUNITY
SUN’s commitment to its people and the surrounding community is deeply ingrained in its corporate ethos.
We support employee well-being through a Wellness Program that encourages healthy lifestyles. Employees are incentivized with Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions for achieving personal wellness goals, including exercise, nutrition, and community engagement. This program underscores SUN’s investment in its workforce’s health, aligning employee well-being.
We actively promote sustainability through the preservation of a 34-acre green space at our headquarters, designed for nature conservation and youth recreation. This initiative highlights SUN’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement by providing a natural area for outdoor activities.
